Of course we believe that every day is a great day to enjoy the delicious flavors that our Austin Hope Sauvignon Blanc offers, but May 3rd is the day that the world comes together to celebrate this incredible white wine.
What is International Sauvignon Blanc Day?
International Sauvignon Blanc Day, celebrated on the first Friday in May each year (May 3rd, 2024), is a global celebration of this iconic white wine varietal. It is a day dedicated to recognizing and appreciating the unique characteristics of Sauvignon Blanc wine, which is loved for its vibrant acidity, refreshing citrus and tropical fruit flavors, and distinct herbaceous notes.
This special day provides an opportunity for wine enthusiasts, sommeliers, winemakers, and wine lovers around the world to come together and celebrate the diversity and quality of Sauvignon Blanc wines. From the crisp, riper expressions of the Paso Robles region to the bold, tropical fruit flavors of New Zealand, Sauvignon Blanc offers a wide range of flavors and styles to explore and enjoy.
When and Where Did International Sauvignon Blanc Day Originate?
While International Sauvignon Blanc Day originated in New Zealand in 2010 as a way to celebrate and promote the Sauvignon Blanc grape variety on a global scale, it gained popularity in the U.S. when St. Supéry Estate Vineyards & Winery, a Napa Valley winery known for its Sauvignon Blanc wines, began promoting the day in the United States.
The inaugural International Sauvignon Blanc Day was celebrated on April 24, 2010. Since then, International Sauvignon Blanc Day has grown in popularity and has become an annual event celebrated by wine enthusiasts and industry professionals worldwide. The day now falls on the first Friday in May each year, although the exact date may vary slightly. This year it will fall on May 3, 2024.
How to Celebrate Sauvignon Blanc Day
There are many different ways you can celebrate International Sauvignon Blanc day, either at home or by visiting your favorite winery or tasting room.
1. Sauvignon Blanc Wine Tasting
Grab a couple bottles of your favorite Sauvignon Blanc wine, as well as a couple from winemakers you don’t know, and have a tasting at your home.
As the temperatures get warmer, a nice crisp, fruity, white wine is great for sitting outside on the patio enjoying the sunny weather. It’s also a great excuse for getting friends or family together.
If you can’t pull together a wine tasting party at your home, head out to your favorite tasting room and enjoy a glass of their popular Sauvignon Blancs. Different wineries and tasting rooms may also be holding events to celebrate the day, so be sure to check ahead to find out what you might be in store for.
2. Pair Sauvignon Blanc With Your Favorite Foods
One of the best ways to celebrate a wine varietal is so pair it with some delicious food. Fire up the grill and put on your favorite seafood, vegetables, or other light grilling foods.
Sauvignon Blanc also pairs extremely well with a lightly grilled chicken, a lighter pasta dish, or a delicious summer salad. If you’re thinking light, you’re thinking right! Lighter foods will help bring out the citrusy flavors found in the wine while also bringing out the flavors inf the dishes as well.
3. Explore Different Wine Regions
This is one of our favorite things to do. Of course we’re always bias towards Paso Robles, but we are wine lovers, so trying wine from different regions is something we love to do.
To celebrate International Sauvignon Blanc day this year, why not try a bottle of wine from a region that you don’t normally buy from. The wine regions of the United States are great, and we love California wine, but there’s a whole big world out there with wine regions all over the place.
This weekend, go pick up yourself a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc from a different region. We recommend New Zealand if you haven’t tried it, but other regions like France, Chile, Australia and South Africa also produce delicious Savignon Blanc wines that are worth your time.
International Sauvignon Blanc Day
Participating in International Sauvignon Blanc Day can involve attending tastings, exploring different bottles of Sauvignon Blanc from various regions, and sharing your favorite bottles with friends and fellow wine enthusiasts.
It’s a day to raise a glass to one of the world’s most popular and versatile white wines and to toast to the growers and winemakers who craft these exceptional wines.
If you’re looking for an exceptional bottle of wine to celebrate the day, we recommend a bottle of our Austin Hope Sauvignon Blanc.
