Malbec World Day is a celebration of one of the most beloved red wines in the world, Malbec. This year, Malbec World Day falls on April 17th, and it’s a perfect opportunity to raise a glass and appreciate this delicious wine.
We never need a specific day to celebrate wine, but if you haven’t tried Malbec, or haven’t found one that you truly enjoy, this is the perfect time to start.
To celebrate this exceptional varietal of wine, lets take a look at the origins of Malbec, its unique characteristics, and different ways you can celebrate Malbec World Day 2024.
When Did Malbec World Day Start?
Malbec World Day was established on April 17th, 2011, by Wines of Argentina, to commemorate the day when Argentine president Domingo Faustino Sarmiento officially made it his mission to transform Argentina’s wine industry.
Sarmiento enlisted the help of French agronomist Michel Aimé Pouget, who brought over various grape varieties, including Malbec, to Argentina. This marked the beginning of Malbec’s journey to becoming Argentina’s signature grape.
What is Malbec Wine?
Malbec is a full-bodied red wine known for its deep purple color and velvety texture. It originated in France, specifically in the Bordeaux region, where it was primarily used as a blending grape in Bordeaux wines. However, it was in Argentina where Malbec found its true home and flourished into the world-class varietal we know today.
Flavors of Malbec
Malbec wines are known for their rich, dark fruit flavors, such as blackberry, plum, and cherry, along with notes of cocoa, tobacco, and vanilla. It typically has a medium to full body with moderate tannins, making it approachable and versatile.
If you’re familiar with Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec is not as dry as a Cabernet, and has a more velvety taste. Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec are often compared because they are darker red wines, but their flavor profiles, tannin levels, and overall mouth feel are very different.
Where Does Malbec Grow?
While Malbec is grown in various wine regions around the world, including France, the United States, and Australia, it is most closely associated with Argentina. The high-altitude vineyards in regions like Mendoza and Salta provide optimal conditions for Malbec, resulting in wines with intense flavors and vibrant acidity.
We grow Malbec grapes in the Highlands District AVA here in Paso Robles. This region provides the high-altitude, warm days, and crisp nights that are perfect for drawing out the best flavors of these grapes.

What Food Pairs Well with Malbec?
Malbec pairs wonderfully with a variety of foods, thanks to its medium to full body and moderate tannins. It is a fantastic match for grilled meats, especially beef, as well as hearty dishes like stews and casseroles. For a simple yet delicious pairing, try a glass of Malbec with a juicy steak or a hearty bowl of pasta with a rich tomato sauce.
